History of the Yorkie |
|
Like many other Terriers, the Yorkshire terrier was originally bred to be a rat catching dog. The first Yorkies were developed from Waterside Terriers, small longish coated dogs, back in the mid 19th century. Early Yorkies were much larger, being a least twice as big as today's toy dog variety. A cross-breeding with the Maltese resulted in the smaller dogs we have today. The Yorkshire Terrier became an American Kennel Club recognized breed in 1885. |
